Retroactive requirements imposed by updated or new conventions may trigger various actions, including need for physical modifications of the vessel. This is referred to as “alterations” in DNV rules. Alterations may be voluntary (e.g. new crane) or mandatory (e.g. ballast water treatment system). The process is typically similar; approval, certification and installation survey.
To handle this process in an efficient and logical way, a separate type of “follow-up” captures the combination of Retroactive requirements & any type of alteration: RRs.
A new statutory requirement which requires approval prior to installation will be shown as an RR for approval. This is automatically replaced by an RR for installation when the required “alteration project” has been ordered in the portal.
A voluntary alteration ordered will in a similar way add an RR for installation survey, but this will not have any due-date and the installation is voluntary.
Consequently, RRs will contain a complete list of what has been requested prepared to be installed on the vessel, a practical way to keep track of projects which require installation survey.
Projects initiated in 2021 and later will include a “link” to the alteration project. In the alteration project you can upload your drawings, download the approved drawings, reply to comments, check on your approval status and find other relevant information. Projects requested by a manager will be accessible for that manager who may share access to the project with e.g. a design office. DNV will however establish projects on the request of a design office directly if this is the agreed arrangement between the design office and the manager. If this is the case, DNV is not allowed to share access with the manager due intellectual property principles and only the RR to request installation survey will be accessible. If you experience that “access is denied” due to the above-mentioned principle, please contact the company who owns the project for inquiries regarding status or documentation.
When the approval process is finalized, please select the relevant RR describing the project you wish to install in a survey request. DNV has standardized some of the commonly used alterations and may provide information to assist the survey process as part of the request (e.g. owner survey preparation note if relevant).
If both the approval and the survey process has been completed, the surveyor will delete the RR as part of the survey and normally issue all required certificates. If either approval or installation survey is incomplete, the RR will be “partially deleted” describing the remaining tasks to be done. If this is the case, request the same RR in scope for another survey (remote may be possible) when missing parts have been handled.
Please note: If you wish to remove cancelled projects or find other inconsistencies in the listing of RRs, please contact DATE.
